Day Four: Aren't we renovating our BATHROOM???

When we were planning this renovation I had this idea in my head that the first couple of days would be some kind of insane chaotic destruct-o-rama with flying insulation particles and lath and plaster strewn about the work areas of the house. I figured when the dust settled we would clean up and start all the rebuilding, and it was pretty much as simple as that - in concept. Reality is different - and better, actually. The planning that has gone into this renovation means that there really is time for all these important side projects - like rewiring the entire upstairs. I've mentioned before that we had only ONE breaker for that floor? One breaker for 21 outlets of one kind or another, including the washer! And all of it is some combination of bare wire knob-and-tube resting in a bed of dry cedar chips with past inexpert renovation splices here and there. Most of those lacking junction boxes. S-C-A-R-Y.
Attic snow driftsSo Steve has basically spent the day sweating his 'bag' off in the attic. (It's been a delightfully sunny and warm September - perfect for attic torture) Scooping more insulation, drilling holes, running wires, wiring up outlets and light fixtures. The reciprocating saw has definitely earned it's right to be here and the sliding compound mitre saw has finally made its' way upstairs from its rather distant previous locale in the shed. This morning saw the first power to the upstairs that was completely devoid of knob-and-tube wiring and two of the four new circuits for the upstairs are up and running power in the office/work area.
Through the roofThere hasn't been much for me to do today other than be the girl-friday. Zoe and I mudded the drywall patches in the suite and hopefully we'll finish that up tomorrow. I have run a few errands to Canadian Tire and the DO-IT Centre - Gotta love the DO-IT Centre!! And tried to sneak upstairs while the kids were watching TV to clean up some of the mess created in rewiring the light fixtures in the bedrooms - rooms previously sealed off from all renovation dust and debris intended to emerge clean and fresh once the upstairs was rendered livible again. Alas, it was not to be.

So why exactly are we doing all of this? Where has the destruction/construction of the bathroom gone? It might feel/seem like we're off track but this stuff is HUGE and by gutting the bathroom we make all of this possible - and in the end we get a safer house and a new bathroom to boot. Don't worry (like I'm sure you all are) there will be plenty more destruction later in the week. Besides, the toilet and sink aren't here yet and the tub won't be ready for another week and a half - so what's the rush??
